The Cover
A double gatefold, measuring 9 inches tall by 17 inches wide, the cover will be painted by acclaimed artist Andy Yelenak and feature a montage of the legends of the race, a dramatic and colorful presentation of Boston Marathon history as it has grown from 18 men running miles of dirt to the world’s best runners competing in a high-tech spectacle.
The montage will have a large feel, as if it’s spilling off the page. Taking a chronological approach, the cover will depict the first field at the starting line with J.J. McDermott, leading to the image of DeMar winning his seventh Boston. Others featured will be
- Tarzan Brown
- Bobbi Gibb
- Johnny A. Kelley
- Johnny J. Kelley
- Bill Rodgers
- Joanie Benoit
- Jean Driscoll
- Catherine Ndereba
- Montage of Kenyan winners Ibrahim Hussain, Cosmas N’Deti, and Moses Tanui, shown in overlapping profiles, almost like they were running alongside one another and a tight shot was taken
